Excitement is mounting for this year’s Made in the Midlands annual exhibition. As if the prospect of displays by hundreds of MIM members were not sufficient reason to attend the event, the organisation has pulled off a major coup in securing a very special attraction.

Centrepiece for the show, which takes place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on June 21, will be the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC).

The car will be the first to attempt to break the 1,000 mph barrier on land and set a new world land speed record in the process.

Designed and constructed in the UK by a team of Formula 1 and aerospace engineers, several of the MIM members exhibiting have supplied parts to the vehicle.

Powered by a 135,000 horsepower Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine normally found in a Typhoon Eurofighter, the car produces 20,000 lbs of thrust - roughly equivalent to the combined output of 360 family saloons.

Its solid aluminium wheels will revolve 170 times a second as it accelerates to a top speed capable of covering a mile in 3.6 seconds - faster than a bullet.

Jason Pitt, CEO, Made in the Midlands, said: “We are thrilled to have secured the Bloodhound SSC for this year’s exhibition.

“The car is a physical embodiment of the goals of MIM in that it promotes manufacturing excellence and strives to get more young people engaged in engineering.

“Its appearance at the exhibition is also a recognition of the esteem in which the industry holds Made in the Midlands and the important contribution its members make to the manufacturing sector.”

The Made in the Midlands exhibition is now in its ninth year and was expected to be the best yet - even before confirmation of the Bloodhound’s appearance.

The event has attracted hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors - including buying teams from many of the major suppliers - and is expected to be the largest dedicated manufacturing show in the region.
